The Rooster Gallery will take part at art fair ART BRUSSELS 2024. Our gallery’s exposition specially conceived for Art Brussels by Lithuanian artists Tomas Dauksa and Andrius Zakarauskas unveils a fabulous installation featuring large scale paintings and sculptural objects.

In his paintings A.Zakarauskas explores themes of human relationships. Yet he looks at the subject matter from painter’s perspective and often transforms the scenes into metaphors for painting and image making in general. The narrative is often driven by the concept of painting as an act of applying paint to the surface of canvas. This act of painting becomes a universal key to reveal the stories behind elaborate and multi-contextual scenes. The main element is a stroke that takes on new forms in its constantly changing relationship with space. T. Dauksa showcases bizarre otherworldly fountains. The artist employs them as peculiar mechanisms that circulate liquefied themes. This time, the objects contain flowing and murmuring love elixir, which takes us back to the equally banal and paradoxical fantasy of eternal love. It accommodates the maddening irrational infatuation, an obsessive craving for the other, and the tiresome being together alike.

Art Brussels is one of the most renowned contemporary art fairs in Europe and a must-see in the international art calendar. Art Brussels presents a strong and international line up and a unique mix of established artists and emerging talent, where 177 leading galleries from 30 different countries present their artists and more than 26.000 visitors gather at the iconic Brussels Expo.

The Rooster Gallery’s events are kindly supported by
Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius City Municipality

The Rooster Gallery will take part at art fair TAF 2024. The gallery installation specially conceived for TAF – Tbilisi art fair 2024, reveals the multifaceted but yet distinctive character of the young Lithuanian art scene, and brings their voice into the current contemporary art and contemporary culture discussions. The Rooster Gallery will introduce the newest artworks by prominent contemporary Lithuanian artists – Egle Karpaviciute, Vita Opolskyte, Jonas Motiejus Meskauskas and Kazimieras Brazdziunas.

TAF is an international contemporary art fair focused on young, emerging and mid-career artists. Art fair is the place to uncover art scenes that are less visible and less easy to access from the eastern and southern frontiers of Europe (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Iran, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Serbia, the Baltic States and more). TAF bets on the young talents and the genuine collectors and galleries who can support them at an early stage and boost their career.

The participation at TAF fair and Tbilisi Art week is a part of the project partially supported by Vilnius City Municipality

The exhibition diptych will be displayed at two venues: exhibition The Lamb – at the Rooster Gallery (12 Šv. Brunono Bonifaco St.), exhibition Climax – at the Lewben Art Foundation (6-12 Bernardinų St.) from April 14 to 30. The opening hours of both galleries are: IV–VI 4 p.m.–7 p.m., VII 2 p.m.–5 p.m.
The opening event will take place on April 14, 6 p.m., at the Lewben Art Foundation space, featuring dj’s Eivydas K and Cyber.

You’d like to think that there is something more in these works of art, something above reality, you’d love to romanticize them, but in reality it is a challenge. For the audience, it bears imagination, beauty, and a sort of enchantment. For the artist, it is a test, an overcoming, and a study.

The works of the painters cited in the canvases were followed by long studies – of models, composition, accompanying symbols, and narratives. A long road and all kinds of hard work on the way to the result – the climax of it. But what we see in front of us in the exhibition is the manipulation of this long, hard work.

In some places, the old masters and classics are replaced by contemporary images, rapidly changing, not nonfading, but instead flashing icons. Its culminating, critical, tension point is replaced by sensation. So much for that – let’s say it’s a climax that ends in a matter of seconds because it’s replaced by another one, essentially dissolving the resolution of what should be the real culmination. After winning no triumph in the salon, this is merely a triumphant stance.

We return to someone who not only creates/manipulates large canvases through physical withdrawal, he also creates with detachment from the subject. Precisely prepared canvases, characters that seem to be cut out with a scalpel, create another level of aesthetic and symbolic sterility. Perhaps this deception, which forces the viewer’s imagination to wander through dream-like states and narratives or through recognizable iconic images, also deceives the painter himself. Finally, he becomes the bare one, trying to distance himself by all possible means, to cleanse his work of himself. Trying to simply choose a task. The idea that an artist suffers in order to create beauty seems incongruous in this case, but these two paths collide in a particular way.

And even the butterfly that has landed on a character’s nose becomes simply a solution, not a sign. The piece is solved, the climax is reached, and it’s time to move on to the next one. Faster than before, while committing betrayal of itself through the act of choice. Solving other tasks, which only the viewer will fit into the framework of his or hers fantasy, while the artist will go in search of other problems, other ways, as if trying to clean up, to solve everyday life problems like an equation. Only one thing goes missing – patience, and the climax without it – just a sensational scream from the stage.

Kazimieras Brazdžiūnas (b. 1991, Kaunas) – painter, curator who, in his work, usually uses quotes and rethinks other artists, contemporary culture and symbols, doing so by using spray paint. However, in this exhibition, the visitor will not see Brazdžiūnas’ own artworks, the exhibition captures the journey and change of one of his works “M.R agnus dei”, which now belongs to the MO collection. Exhibition “The Lamb” will run parallel the exhibition “Climax” (Lewben Art Foundation), where you can view the painter’s recent works. In 2018 the artist received a master’s degree in painting at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since 2012 the artist curates and participates in group exhibitions and art projects. His work has been exhibited in more than thirty exhibitions in such galleries as “The Rooster Gallery”, “Vartai”, “Pamėnkalnis gallery”, “Meno parkas” and elsewhere. In 2018 he founded the art platform of young Lithuanian painters “Counter-Argument”. In 2021 Brazdžiūnas won the special mention of the Young Painter’s Prize. The artist’s works have been acquired by Lewben Art Foundation, MO Museum, and other private collectors.

Recycled Colours is J. Tarabilda’s seventh solo exhibition, and the works are made using paint leftovers accumulated in the artist’s studio over the last few years, painting on canvas.

DECOY. Solo show by Jonas Motiejus Meškauskas

“You can be fooled. He has placed a decoy and will lure you into a convoluted trap – tensions that will trigger you by their amplitudes like an incoherent crime story. You will get drawn into a play with more spacious contexts, more capacious discourses, and higher-status concepts: […] resurrection after the death of painting or the author, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, arte povera, rural homages to Tuymans, photography, semiotics, becoming, perception, reality and reality, reality and fiction, reality and virtuality, fictitious reality, simulacrum, hyper-reality/fiction, artist and viewer, subject and object, local and global, perhaps even glocal, studium and punctum, theory and practice, top and bottom, form and content, critique of something else (expectation, nobility, medium, prestige, capital, society, technologies, power, centre, institution, anthropos etc.), ghosts of Georges Didi-Huberman, phenomena of Mintautas Gutauskas, eternal post- state, anachronism and déjà vu, here-there, inside-outside […]. But he will laugh at you flirting with dialectic connections and will say: ‘Admit it, and let go of everything that clings… All the filth… While rolling in mud and noise, return to purity’.

He – Jonas Motiejus Meškauskas – creates monochrome paintings on corrugated cardboard, which he brings from the street. He makes use of a chaotic, random image archive and does not try to mythologize the content by creating tensions or to ennoble materiality with the word ‘ephemeral’, to embellish everything with thoughtful quotes from unread books or by using neutral colours to give his works a sense of frozen reality, which determines the bipolarity of their form and content. He leaves it to those who are keen to look for dystopian models of reality, to create narratives, to establish dialogues, and to find the link between alienated reality and domesticated unreality, and to capture the uncertainty hovering between them. Thus, in the end, the set of static images created by him turns out to be just a decoy, offering a network of interpretive solutions – or, rather, impasses.” – Bliss

Jonas Meškauskas (b. 1998) is a painter of the young generation. Having obtained a bachelor’s degree at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2022, he is currently continuing his master’s studies in painting. From 2018, he takes part in creative residencies, from 2020 – in group exhibitions. In 2021, he held a solo exhibition in Lukiškės Prison. In 2022, he was a finalist of the Young Painter’s Prize competition.

Exhibition curators: Bliss & Samanta

The exhibition opening will take place on February 1, at 18:00, in the gallery’s venue at 12 Šv. Brunono Bonifaco St., The Rooster Gallery. The exhibition will be open until February 26. The gallery’s visiting hours: Thursday to Saturday 16.00–19.00, Sunday 14.00–17.00.
